As we start to settle in after Thanksgiving there’s an underlying current in my being that is disturbing me. I have come to realize that In the recent years I have started to dislike Thanksgiving.

The story we are told in school is that the explorer Christopher Columbus wanted fame and fortune. Ferdinand and Isabella wanted the same, along with the opportunity to export Catholicism to lands across the globe. So Christopher Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did.
Instead, he stumbled upon the Americas and colonization started by brutally murdering indigenous peoples that included all men, women and children to overtake the fertile land.
Once a whole village was murdered and they had possession of their land - they celebrated with a feast, and called it Thanksgiving. It was and is a feast for the settlers to celebrate the Indigenous peoples’ murder and the conquering of their land.

I find this extremely disturbing and in my heart I know there’s no way I can continue this tradition of thanksgiving. Theres no possible way I could give thanks to the murder and bloodshed of so many indigenous people, its disturbing.
Below is the colonization clearing & forgiveness ceremony. I offer this to you, the reader, in the hopes that the land and its spirits of indigenous peoples find peace, comfort and healing through these prayers and ceremonies. May there be forgiveness for what has been done and the celebrations of these murders for generations afterwards.
Colonization clearing & forgiveness ceremony:
Stand facing to the East
Center your energy and focus on your heart
Ask for forgiveness from the land if you own your own property.
Ask forgiveness from the lands indigenous owners and their spirit.
As for their blessing to be on their land
Burn sage to clear any residual energy left on their land (pain, sadness, grief, anger)
Give an offering of peace to the ancestors (it could be indigenous food for example corn, beans, squash, pumpkin, sunflowers…) or a candle that you burn in their honor.
Say a prayer of peace that is genuine and centered in your heart.
Close the ceremony in gratitude.
Next year on Thanksgiving when your with your family around your food filled table - honor indigenous ancestors and spirits of the land you are on by giving gratitude for their lives and their land that was so brutally taken from them and their families.
